Ajax defeat Portland Timbers in friendly

Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam defeated MLS expansion franchise Portland Timbers 2-0 in an exhibition friendly on Wednesday night.

JELD-WEN Field played host to the two clubs with over 18,000 fans in attendance who saw Lorenzo Ebecilio blast home in the 18th before Demy De Zeeuw rounded out the match in the final minute of regular time.

Timbers head coach John Spencer said it was a good lesson for his team who were outclassed by Frank De Boer's outfit who, as usual, kept possession of the ball for lengthy amounts of time.

"It was a great measuring stick," Spencer said. "(Our) players watch Champions League football on television and think, 'Well, that's easy. I can do that.'

"Then you get a chance to see them up close and how good their technique is. I thought their movement was exhilarating at times.

"It was a good training game for them at the end of the season and a good training game for us in the middle of the season," Spencer added.

"The important thing for us is to win the game this weekend. Coming away nice and healthy is a good night for us."
