Tottenham secure Round of 32 Europa League berth

Tottenham are into the knockout stages of the Europa League courtesy of a 2-1 win over Sheriff Tiraspol on Thursday night.

Spurs continued their 100% record in Group K by netting twice in quick succession midway through the second half against the Moldovan club at White Hart Lane.

Summer signing Erik Lamela opened his Tottenham account when he slotted home on the hour-mark before winning the penalty which allowed Jermain Defoe to make history with a 23rd goal in European competition.

Defoe converted from the spot in the 67th minute to break Martin Chivers' club record of 22 goals on the continent and in the process gave the north Londoners a two-goal advantage which proved vital in the end.

Sheriff managed to reply with a little under 20 minutes remaining when Ismail Isa pulled one back for the visitors but thankfully for Spurs, the damage had already been done and they now move through to the Round of 32 with two group stage matches to go.
