Tottenham's Vertonghen thrilled to salute in 'important' North London derby

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen was jubilant after helping his side to a 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the North London derby at White Hart Lane today.

The Belgian discovered just how vital the clash between the two sides really is and was thrilled to help Spurs to a home win which puts the third-placed side seven points clear of their red and white rivals.

"I just arrived here six months but you can feel this is one of the most important games of the season," he told Sky Sports.

"It's a north London derby and my first win, so I'm very happy.

"We know we can defend, we are a very strong team, we can play compact and we showed it again."
