Newcastle United are ready to look elsewhere for a new striker after Modibo Maiga's failed medical.

The Sunday Sun says there was an issue with a knee injury which caused concern regarding the Sochaux forward.

A source close to the deal proclaimed it "dead" - and said there was no chance of it being resurrected.

United had already assembled a hit list of targets that includes Luuk de Jong of FC Twente and Lille's Moussa Sow, who are both keen to move to Tyneside.
