Fulham's Schwarzer backs Culina to maintain standards in Australia

Fulham and Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer believes Jason Culina's return to Australia will not be a negative move.

Culina's move to Gold Coast United from Dutch club PSV Eindhoven has raised eyebrows, especially those of national team selectors, but Schwarzer is confident playing in the A-League won't have a detrimental effect on his game.

"That's always going to be the preference for the national team coach to have all his players playing at the highest possible level," Schwarzer said.

"When you look at a player like Jason who was playing at one of the biggest clubs in Europe, to then leave and come back to Australia, obviously from a performance level each week, you're playing at a lesser level.

"That will always be a slight concern…it does raise a few eyebrows.

"(But) knowing what Jason's like and what a professional he is and how dedicated he is, I don't really believe it's going to be a major issue.

"I personally believe he'll keep himself in the best possible shape. I don't think his game will change in any way."
