Paul Scharner is set to join German club Hamburg according to recent reports.
The Austrian international midfielder, who can also play in defence, was released by West Bromwich Albion at the end of last season and now only needs to pass a medical to complete his move to Hamburg, delighting soon-to-be boss Thorsten Fink.
"Paul Scharner is just the type of player we are looking for," Fink told Kicker-Sportmagazin.
"He is experienced, but still at a good age. He is a senior international as well.
"He is definitely not here just to top up the size of our squad, he is able to play an important role for us inside our first team."
Scharner kicked off his career Austria Vienna in 1998 before moving to Salzburg in 2004 and then onto SK Brann the same year. Since then he has spent six years in England with Wigan Athletic and the Baggies.
