Derby boss McClaren: We couldn't get Rooney off Man Utd training pitch

Derby County boss Steve McClaren has discussed working with Wayne Rooney at Manchester United.

Former United No2 McClaren has revealed how he had to set up TWO coaching sessions while Wayne Rooney was around - one for him and another for the rest of the players.

He recalled to the People: "We never could get him off the training pitches - either at Manchester United or England.

"At Old Trafford, I'd have to plan one session for the team and another one for him.

"It was to stop him going off and joining in with the Under-21s. If they had no keeper, Wayne would play there if they would let him. So we had to think of other ways to occupy him.

"Finishing sessions, specific one-on-one work. He had so much enthusiasm to play. He was never, ever the first in after training. That was the one thing I noticed when I went to Old Trafford - that training never stopped.

"There was plenty of times when Sir Alex Ferguson would bang on the window and tell them to pack it in on a Friday afternoon. He'd be screaming, 'Save your legs!' Wayne took notice because it was Sir Alex - but he didn't want to. He'd have been out there all day."
