Chelsea skipper Terry tackles Mum controversy

Chelsea and England captain John Terry was on the front foot yesterday over his Mum's arrest for alleged shoplifting.

When it was put to the Chelsea defender that his mum's situation must have affected him mentally, his reply was an unequivocal: "No."

Then he added: "I've seen different headlines over the years about myself and other things about my family and you learn to deal with that.

"I came out and trained normally this morning.

"The lads have seen the headline and that's it.

"It doesn't affect me on the pitch or off it. I've seen many headlines over the years and I'll continue to get on with my football.

"I can't really talk about it because it's a very personal matter."

England manager Fabio Capello admitted he discussed the subject with Terry but would not elaborate.

He said: "It was a private conversation."
