Bolton Wanderers boss Gary Megson is aiming to beat Newcastle for Chelsea defender Tal Ben Haim.

Wanderers have asked for first refusal on the Israel defender, who is not part of Avram Grant's plans. They have good relations with Chelsea supremo Peter Kenyon and believe a deal can be done to land a fans' favourite and thwart ex-boss Sam Allardyce.

Newcastle manager Allardyce wants Ben Haim to bolster his struggling Toon defence. A loan request was refused, he was told a fee is required.

Bolton may be reluctant to pay to get their old player back, but are considering making an offer if the price is sensible - and they do not want to see Allardyce taking him again.
