Aston Villa warn Liverpool off Delph

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert has warned Liverpool that they have a fight on their hands if they want to sign Fabian Delph.

The Reds are believed to be showing significant interest in the 25-year old midfielder, who comes out of contract this summer, and could come in with an £8million offer according to reports.

However, Lambert feels Delph is not holding out for a much larger wage at Villa, as has been reported, and expects the former Leeds United youngster to stay true to the Birmingham club.

"Can we keep him? Yes. With Fabian it will not be about money. He's not a money-orientated guy. He just wants to play football," he said.

"It would be a major boost if we can get him to stay. It would send out a great message. Him turning around and staying would be a massive statement.

"We're still talking to Fabian. Hopefully we can get something done. It would be great for us if we could do it.

"Having him back is a massive plus. If he keeps progressing and doing what he's doing he's in for a big career."
