Scottish Football Association chief executive Stewart Regan has revealed that top flight clubs have dug into their pockets to help save the state of the Scottish game.
Yesterday's meeting at Scottish football's headquarters, Hampden, revealed a new league setup in a 12-18-18 club system which will see a merger of the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League, a reallocation of income, the introduction of play-offs and a pyramid structure.
Regan says SPL clubs have backed the new format which will be finalised if 75% of clubs accept it at a meeting later this month.
"It is a new dawn, I think you would say, for Scottish football," Regan said.
"What has encouraged me most is that both sides have made concessions in order to make this happen.
"SPL clubs have given up a substantial seven-figure sum that is going to be shared through the rest of the game.
"Also the Scottish Football League have agreed to open up for the first time ever - subject to club consultation - and introduce a pyramid for the game.
"Both of those are huge concessions and they indicate there is a desire to change.
"They are massive steps forward for the game. There is a lot of work still to be done and the clubs need to be taken through the detail.
"A plan will be worked out collectively before the end of the month and presented to clubs for their views."
