Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate is determined to establish the club as a top ten regular.

Southgate said: "What we are trying to do is piece by piece, build a football club that can be successful not just in the space of a year or two years in cup competitions, but can progress and climb the league table and be consistently achieving top 10 finishes and from then on, top eight and European places.

"We have had great success in the last few years in cup competitions, we have had one very good league season in my time here where we finished seventh and one under Bryan (Robson) where we finished ninth.

"But apart from that, we have not been able to break into the top 10, and that has got to be our aim."
