Wigan Athletic have produced a massive upset with a 1-0 win over Manchester United at the DW Stadium tonight.
Shaun Maloney 's 50th minute goal allowed the Latics to move two points out of the relegation zone whilst making United's stranglehold on the title not so tight as they are now just five points ahead of Manchester City who hammered West Bromwich Albion 4-0.
It was yet again a night of drama for the referee and his assistants as Maloney's curled effort should never have been allowed as it came from a corner that wasn't there but it evened out as Victor Moses' header on the half-hour mark was disallowed for a block by Gary Caldwell on David de Gea.
After the goal, United were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when Maynor Figueroa blocked Phil Jones' cross with his arm but nothing was paid by Phil Dowd and his team as another match will provide plenty of headlines for the wrong reasons.
But taking nothing away from Roberto Martinez's Wigan, who were brilliant in making life difficult for Sir Alex Ferguson's charges, by creating more chances for themselves than the current league leaders and coming away with a vital set of three points which could help them again avoid the drop.
