Everton missed a host of chances before going down 1-0 to River Plate of Argentina at the Commonwealth Stadium in Canada. The only goal of the game came mid-way through the first half as veteran River striker Ariel Ortega's delicate chip was enough to beat Carlo Nash.

The Toffees also had a good shout for a penalty turned down when James Vaughan was bundled over.
