Melbourne Victory's Thompson takes cautious approach

Melbourne Victory strike Archie Thompson is being cautious about the next stage of the season, knowing all too well that fortunes can change. After two losses in a row, the Victory relinquished top position on the A-League table to Adelaide United and Thompson knows that if they don't turn their form around now, finals could be a pipedream.

"We've sort of shot ourselves in the foot," Thompson said.

"We could have been so far in front and now it seems like we need to win every single game. Every game now is a final to make the finals.

"If you asked a month ago, I would have counted on us making the finals. But after the last two games, we just can't take anything for granted. We just need to work hard and not even think about it."

Melbourne faces bottom side Newcastle Jets away this weekend, but Thompson is wary of the reigning premiers.

"They've got a better team than the results show," said Thompson.

"We've just got to make sure we win."
