Carragher: Liverpool should've signed Everton's McCarthy at 16

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher feels his old club should've signed Everton midfielder James McCarthy.

Kop idol Carragher, a boyhood Toffee, has spoken of his regret that Liverpool didn't snap-up the then 16-year-old McCarthy.

Carragher said: "He came in for a lot of money.

"He's a player who came in and Leon Osman was playing off the front and Ross Barkley on the wing.

"He's someone that Martinez knows from Wigan.

"He actually came to Liverpool as a 16-year-old on trial, we almost signed him.

"I wish we had him.

"He hasn't got a goal yet and that's something that he lacks in his game but he looks to me like an all-round midfield player.

"He looks aggressive and he can player but he needs to add goals to his game.

"Martinez said he would have paid double for him, he paid about £12m, so that shows how highly Martinez rates him."
