Galliani explained his decision, stating:  "I am a student of Silvio Berlusconi and even if I haven't learned everything from him, I have learned a little something in 45 years, like the thing that needs to be innovated.

"Berlusconi's Milan was born on 1 July 1987 with the arrival of a coach who had only spent one year in Serie B with Parma who were newly promoted. Arrigo Sacchi arrived. In those days coaches started from Serie C and then slowly moved up and Milan chose a coach who had never coached  in Serie A. When we took Palladino, who now all of Italy wanted and I'm happy with, he had never coached professionals.

"Nesta has made his own journey,   he is an unreachable champion and was one of the best defenders in the world. I always thought that he was stronger than Thiago Silva and having been a great player can help him. He followed the path starting from Miami and grew up, then returned to Italy and had a very good championship, in terms of team-results relationship, at Reggiana. Taking all this into account we arrived at the decision."

Galliani then stated: "Nesta will probably be the coach of Monza. He has to resolve his matters with Reggiana, which is a friendly club. So let's keep a bottle in the fridge, but the situation should be resolved positively. I don't want to jump the gun but in my opinion it won't take long. Nesta will most likely be our coach."
