The all-action Chelsea midfielder is one who manager Gareth Southgate will rely on this summer.
But if circumstances had been a little different, Gallagher may have been wearing blue more often at international level too.
He stated, “When I was 15 or 16, I wasn’t good enough to play for the England youth team so I went to train with one of the Scotland teams to see what I was like … and I wasn’t good enough for them either!
“So I managed to work my way back into the England youth set-up and was lucky enough to stay in it.”
He added on a productive club season: “I think I have come a long way this season and I give a lot of credit to (Mauricio) Pochettino and what he has done for me.
“He gave me responsibility and trust at Chelsea and put me in a better position to be a bigger part of the squad at this tournament and I'll do as much as I can to help England in the tournament.”
