Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster: We must stay positive

Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster says they must stay positive after defeat at home to Brentford.

After a lacklustre first half performance in which they fell behind, the Hornets came out showing spirit and fight in the second, before a stoppage time header condemned them to a tenth consecutive home defeat, just moments after both Joshua King and Imran Louza had failed to score with an open goal.

“That's football," Foster told the club website. “That's our season in a nutshell but we only have ourselves to blame. First half we've gone a goal down, really disappointed and really low on confidence. In the second half we start with nothing to lose, backs against the walls and play with more freedom.

“It's not about what we say at half-time, it's about not having anything to lose. You have to start every game with that mindset."

Foster believes that the "nothing to lose" mindset has to be Watford's default approach to each of their remaining six matches now, with relegation looking the most likely outcome of this campaign.

“You've got to have hope," he continued. “If we can approach every game with that 'nothing to lose' mentality, because now we're at the point, we may as well go for it. Today was huge, a massive blow. Hopefully we can recover for the Man City game next weekend. It's tough, we know that.

“I'm the guy who always has a smile on my face and I'll be like that all week long to get the lads going. It's a daunting trip to Man City but if we can replicate that second-half performance we'll have a chance at least."
