Swansea boss Monk not placing emphasis on Europa League finish

Garry Monk insists Swansea City are not hanging their hopes on producing a top-seven finish this season.

The Swans defeated Arsenal 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Monday night to remain eighth on the table, a point behind seventh-placed Southampton, and two in arrears of sixth-placed Tottenham.

With Europa League football now a distinct possibility, you could excuse Monk for dreaming of Europe, but the humble boss was simply focused on a winning end to a successful season which has the seen the Welsh club break their Premier League points record.

"I don't focus on that. What will be will be and we'll just keep pushing," said Monk in relation to a Europa finish.

"The good thing about playing on Monday night was that we saw the results and the places above us had opened up with the results, so why shouldn't we be pushing for that? Why shouldn't we be pushing those teams above and go on the hunt for them?"

He added: "I think today showed exactly what we're about and how we think about each game.

"We'll take the next two games and whether that takes us, then great. If not we'll have to asses again in the summer."

Bafetimbi Gomis came off the bench to score an 85th-minute header, with the help of goal-line technology, as former Gunners keeper Lukasz Fabianski returned to north London to star for the Swans in their second triumph over Arsenal this season.
