Southampton striker Shane Long could be about to earn a recall with the Republic of Ireland.

The veteran attacker has enjoyed a great season in the Premier League.

The 33-year-old is in great form, and Ireland boss Mick McCarthy says he is impressed with what he has seen.

Long could be in the next squad McCarthy aims.

He told reporters: “Shane Long looked fit against Burnley, he's got that athleticism back and the sharpness that comes with playing regular first team football.

"He was competitive throughout the game and he's back where we need him to be to push for a place on the plane to Slovakia, which is good news."
