Jose Mourinho highlighted the importance of Matteo Darmian's contribution in Manchester rUnited's win over Chelsea on Sunday.

The Italian full-back had been 'blacklisted' by Mourinho, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, but did his chances of staying at Old Trafford absolutely no harm with his showing in the 2-0 win.

Essentially starting in a three-man defence alongside Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly, Darmian reportedly won 100% of aerial duels, had a 90% pass completion rate and won four tackles, prompting high praise from Mourinho.

“It was a special benefit," he said.

“Perhaps for some it is hard to realise how important the role Darmian played in the match."

It was arguably one of Darmian's most impressive performance for the Red Devils and could influence Mourinho's decision to retain his services beyond the summer.
