LVG praises fans as Man Utd edge ahead of neighbours Man City

Louis van Gaal feels Manchester United now have a slight advantage over rivals Manchester City following Sunday's 4-2 derby triumph.

The Red Devils were beaten 1-0 by City in van Gaal's first Manchester derby in November but recovered with a brilliant performance after conceding inside ten minutes to Sergio Aguero.

United had an irresistible spell on a wet day at Old Trafford which saw goals from Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Juan Mata and Chris Smalling - two either side of the break - before Aguero pulled one back late in what was a monumental day under van Gaal's reign.

Van Gaal spoke highly of the Red Devils supporters who have enjoyed some good form of late and the former Barcelona and Bayer Munich boss believes things are now back in United's favour in England's third city.

"It was not the best performance, because we started very badly, but we regained our confidence, scored the goals and the second half was fantastic," said the Dutchman.

"At the start of the season it was not fantastic to be a United man and the fans still have supported us.

"This week they can go on the streets, heads up and say: 'We are the better team because goal average (over the two derbies) is in our favour'."
