HeroISL: Materazzi thrilled after Chennaiyin take top spot

Chennaiyin FC player-coach Marco Materazzi was delighted after seeing his side move to the top of the Hero Indian Super League table.

The Chennai outfit, who are owned by Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, recorded their first victory in five matches when defeating Pune City FC 3-1 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Wednesday.

Second-half goals from Stiven Mendoza, Bruno Pelissari and Jeje Lalpekhlua ended a four-game draw streak for Chennai who conceded an own-goal from Eric Djemba-Djemba in the 70th minute.

After the match, Inter Milan great Materazzi, who again did not play, spoke of his enjoyment in guiding the side to the top of the standings where they share 16 points and a goal difference of plus-five with Atletico de Kolkata but are ahead by virtue of goals scored.

"It was not good to get the draws in the last four games and we deserved to win," said the Italian in the post-match press conference.

"Today the team played extremely well, and we won as a team. I am very happy with a 3-1 victory and hopefully we can take the confidence to the next game."

Chennaiyin next take on fourth-placed Mumbai City FC in Mumbai on Sunday as they look to maintain their advantage over Kolkata who are away to Kerala Blasters on Friday.
