CONCAF want extra World Cup place

CONCACAF, the football body that represents North, Central American and Caribbean countries, has called for FIFA to award the region an extra place at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, reports Sport Business. Under the qualifying format used for the 2006 World Cup, CONCACAF was awarded three automatic places while a fourth team was promoted to a play-off against a team from the Oceania Football Confederation.

"We believe that CONCACAF deserves another full place at the World Cup Finals due to the performances of our teams on the field and the actions of our confederation off it," CONCACAF president Jack Warner said in a statement. "We are unified in our efforts to make this happen."

FIFA has not yet announced the qualifying format for the 2014 tournament, but Warner said a decision on the organisation's request for an extra place was expected by March.
