Atletico Madrid have staved off the interest surrounding 21-year old defender Lucas Hernandez by extending his contact till 2022.

Manchester United were reportedly keen on the French Under 21 international, along with other European clubs.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Hernandez reiterated his happiness following the deal: "I am very happy to renew with the club I have spent my whole life with."

Atletico sporting director Jose Luis Cameniro said, "It is great news for all Atletico fans, he is a player with enormous potential with a spectacular future to come."

With injuries to the likes of Jose Maria Gimenez, Sime Vrsaljko and Juanfran, Hernandez is poised to start in Tuesday's Champions league semi final against cross-town rivals Real Madrid.
