According to Fabrizio Romano, Sarri, 67, will end his spell at Lazio and head to Atalanta to take over from Raffaele Palladino.
Former Italy manager Gattuso, who has been out of work since failing to qualify for the World Cup, will then take over at Lazio.
Gattuso, 48, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal in Rome as he seeks to revive his managerial career.
