Gibbs-White showed a social media photo comparing Varane's position when the kick was taken to that of Wataru Endo, who was given offside for a Virgil Van Dijk header in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.
Varane appeared to block the run of Felipe while being offside, but the officials did not believe it impacted the goal.
The logic indicated that Varane did not block a player that could have reached Casemiro, who scored, while Endo was judged to have stopped a Chelsea player from engaging with Van Dijk for his header.
