It was with Serie A minnows Lecce where he caught the attention of Sporting, with Hjulmand wearing the captain's armband at times with his former Italian club.
If you ask Sune Smith-Nielsen, Director of Development at FC Copenhagen, and Tribalfootball.com did just that, Hjulmand has the credentials to go far.
We are very proud of Morten," says Smith-Nielsen.
"He is the perfect example of a player who had a difficult period as a teenager. He was really skilled, but didn't really grow in size and also struggled to find out what kind of footballer he was.
"But when he joined our U17s under current first team coach Jacob Neestrup, he exploded."
Just like Rasmus Hjlund, Hjulmand chose a move to Austria, with Admira Wacker, to further his career and never managed to turn out for the first team in the Superliga for FC Copenhagen. After 91 games for Lecce in Italia, he joined up with Sporting at the start of the 23/24 season.
