Xavi had met briefly with president Joan Laporta after victory over Rayo Vallecano last week. Laporta was ill at the time and only congratulated Xavi on the win and little else.
However, after being admitted to hospital for checks, Laporta spent longer with Xavi on Thursday when he informed the coach: "If I acted emotionally, I would like you to continue as a coach; but if I do it rationally, it is best that you do not continue."
Xavi left the meeting knowing he was to be dismissed.
And that was fully confirmed last Friday. Laporta's idea was always to tell him on Monday or Tuesday after the last league game against Sevilla and, above all, after the final of the Women's Champions League.
However, events forced a change due to numerous rumours about contact with Hansi Flick.
