McCoist told Tribalfootball.com: "Brilliant, we had unbelievably talented players, you know, and so different, completely different talents and completely different characters.
"I think that was the genius of Walter Smith when he was manager. He could bring all these talents and all these at times very complex characters together with an excellent
camaraderie and an excellent dressing room and I think that was important.
"Particularly like Gazza and Laudrup - I think for those guys to perform at the height of their ability and the height of their careers I think they had to be in an environment where they felt very, very comfortable. They were relaxed, they enjoyed it and I think that was the case at Rangers.
"We really did have a good dressing room and good people and I think both those players in particular... I genuinely believe in my opinion we actually got the best of those players throughout their career.
"I think Laudrup's performance at Rangers. I think Gascoigne's performance at Rangers. It might be a kind of bizarre thing to say, you think the career that Gascoigne had obviously Spurs and Lazio and he went to Everton, Brian had an unbelievable career all over the place... but I think we got the best of them and it was just an absolute privilege to play and train alongside these boys."
Asked if Gers fans will ever see such gold-dust again, McCoist was pessimistic.
"I can't lie to you. I'd love to say yes, I really would because you know I'm a Rangers fan. But at this moment in time to be brutally honest I think finances have dictated the gap between Rangers and Celtic perhaps even the clubs in Europe like Ajax, to a certain degree, PSV and Copenhagen and teams like that.
"It's just going to be extremely difficult to compete with your Real Madrid, Barcelona, Man City, Chelsea, you know, the clubs with real, real finance I think will naturally get the best players.
"Unfortunately I think the gap for a number of teams has widened in such a way it would be very, very difficult."
