"What direction is the club going in? They spent fortunes and when Pochettino came in it was a relatively bizarre situation where he was perhaps the first manager, I can remember who had to get rid of players rather than bring his own. It's a crazy decision," says McCoist, shaking his head, while we move north of the border in order to calm his nerves again.
Saturday is time for the FA Cup final and as unbelievable as that sounds it is actually the first time since 2002 that Rangers and Celtic face each other in the final. That's 22 years! Celtic enter the final as favourite having beaten their arch-rivals three times this season with the fourth ending in a stalemate, and McCoist is hoping for Rangers' sake they've learned from previous meetings.
"It's been a weakness for Rangers, particularly in the Old Firm games, that they don't start well. For some reason Rangers don't seem prepared for the way Celtic come out and play on the front foot, which I find absolutely incredible. In these games, you'd expect the tempo immediately to be at 100%."
In all four meetings this season, Celtic have gone into half-time with a lead, not least because of a certain Celtic topscorer.
"Rangers have got to stop Matt O'Riley. He has been absolutely terrific. His quality on the ball, his finishing, everything about him. He looks a top-class player. Sadly, from Celtic supporters' point of view, he looks to moving in the summer, but he's been pivotal in their success this year.
"Celtic clearly were at their weakest when they didn't have Carter-Vickers and McGregor, but I think both are back in the team which allows Matt O'Riley to go and play. That is something Rangers will have to be very, very concerned about.
"A positive for Rangers is that they've got arguably one of the best players this season in Jack Butland. He has been out of this world, absolutely fantastic. I know Shankland won the Player of the Year and I do not have a problem with that, but Butland ran him close.
"Rangers need some big performances from players like Butland and Tavernier," states McCoist who is certain John Lundstram will start the game as well, despite his recent showing in the latest Old Firm derby. Scoring an own goal before getting sent off, all inside the first 45 minutes, didn't exactly help his team-mates, and that is exactly why he should start.
"Put a bit of pressure on him by saying; 'look, you let us down the last time. Go and redeem yourself'. And I think he'll grab it," says McCoist who played a bunch of Old Firm derbies himself and he assures Tribalfootball that they are all equally intense, even when you play each other at least four times every season.
"You would think familiarity takes a bit of the pressure off, but it doesn't. I think, I can speak for the Celtic supporters as well as the Rangers supporters; it doesn't matter when the game's played, you wake up in the morning with that feeling in your stomach. You're nervous. You're excited. You're looking forward to it."
Brendan Rodgers should be looking forward to it, having dominated both Rangers managers this season. He's come across very feisty this season, though, and McCoist puts it down to feeling the pressure.
"Let us be honest about it; some of the Celtic supporters weren't happy with the way he left and for that reason, they didn't really want him back. To be fair to Brendan, he's handled the pressure. He's delivered another league title and I think he's quite right to say, 'look, I've answered my critics.
"'I've given you another league title and I've given us an opportunity to win a The Double'. But the hairs on the back of his neck have been up and fair play to him. It's a side of him we don't often see, and I don't mind it at all."
