Zimbabwe star Benjani shrugs off Portsmouth heroics

Benjani Mwaruwari is delighted with his rich vein of scoring form for Portsmouth.

Popular Zimbabwe captain Benjani, who notched a stunning hat-trick in the recent 7-4 rout of Reading, is top of the Premier League scoring charts with Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor after his sixth goal of the season in the 2-0 win at Fulham on Sunday.

And that is as many as he scored in 34 appearances last season - and far better than the single strike he managed in 17 games after joining Pompey for that huge fee from French club Auxerre the previous campaign.

He insists: "I don't follow the goal charts and I don't care who scores the goals so long as the team plays well and wins.

"My target (this season) is between 10 and 15 goals. Anything else above 15 would be a bonus for me and the manager.

"All the strikers need to score goals to help the club do well and I am heading to that.

"I know that if I keep scoring I have the confidence back and I am a confidence player.

"If you hit the ball hard enough and you are lucky it goes into the net and that's what happened against Fulham, even though it took a deflection."

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp added: "Benjani has always been good for us. Now he's scoring as well and that's great for everybody. He has been scoring while Kanu has been out injured but Kanu has been great, too."
