Wrath of Fergie! The day Gerrard rejected 3-year Man Utd contract

Sir Alex Ferguson's blast for Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard in his new book could be due to the Scouse legend turning down Manchester United almost 20 years ago. The Telegraph says Ferguson may never have forgotten how a 14-year-old turned down a three-year deal with Manchester United in 1994.

Ferguson may even remember having dinner with the midfielder, who impressed in two trial games for United. "He desperately wanted me to sign,'' recalled Gerrard in 2006.

United kept sending "we want you" letters to Gerrard at his home in Huyton.

Shortly after that meal, Gerrard walked into Steve Heighway's office at Liverpool's academy, mentioned the interest of United (and Spurs, Manchester City, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Everton among others) and walked out with the promise of a decent YTS contract.
