Switzerland have produced a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Ecuador to open their 2014 FIFA World Cup account in style.
The Swiss fell behind when Enner Valencia rose above a pack of players to head home Walter Ayovi's pinpoint free-kick in the 22nd minute but managed to fight back to record a comeback win in their Group E opener.
Valencia's goal came when he got free in the area to meet Ayovi's leftwing set-piece but it was cancelled out three minutes into the second half when substitute Admir Mehmedi, who had replaced Valentin Stocker at the break, produced a header of his own from close range to finish Ricardo Rodriguez's out-swinging corner.
The Swiss created more of the scoring chances throughout and probably deserved to go ahead on a number of occasions only for Ecuador keeper Alexander Dominguez to keep them at bay.
However, they were rewarded for their attacking tenacity when second-half sub Haris Seferovic was perfectly placed to slot home a low cross from Rodriguez in the third minute of stoppage time.
For their dramatic winner, Switzerland hit Ecuador on the counter attack after Valon Behrami had come up with a desperate tackle to deny Michael Arroyo who was in a great scoring position.
Ottmar Hitzfeld's Swiss side will now prepare for their clash with France on June 20 while Reinaldo Ruesca's La Tri next take on Honduras on the same day.
