WORLD CUP 2018: Saudi Arabia secure consolation win over Egypt

Egypt have gone crashing out of the FIFA World Cup without a win, as Saudi Arabia took all three points from their clash with a 2-1 victory.

Both sides entered the match on zero points and nothing to play for, but still named strong sides, Mohamed Salah started for Egypt despite concerns about his shoulder.

The first half started positively for Egypt, as their star man Salah opened the scoring with an expert chip over the keeper. Salah's celebration was muted, which is interesting given the recent rumours that he may be considering quitting the national team.

Fahad Al Mullawad was handed a chance to equalise for Saudi Arabia with a penalty, but missed his opportunity to bring his side back into the game.

Egypt went into the half time break with the lead, but it didn't take long for Saudi Arabia to fight their way back into the match after the restart of play.

Saudi Arabia were finally rewarded for dominating the play after the referee awarded another penalty, which this time was converted by Salman Al Faraj to bring the score to 1-1.

Despite holding off an onslaught of attacks for 95 minutes, Egyptian hearts were broken in the final moments of play as Salem Al Dawsari tucked away the winner to give his side a prideful 2-1 victory.

For both sides, their World Cup journey has come to an end, but for Egypt especially it's a tournament of what might have been. Fans could be forgiven for wondering how different things might have been had a certain Sergio Ramos not clashed with their talisman in the Champions League final.
