Work in progress to reach 'Sir Bobby days' says Newcastle's Ameobi

Newcastle United forward Shola Ameobi says it is a work in progress as the club tries to regain their status as a top flight power.

The Magpies were competing in the UEFA Champions League just under ten years ago when the late Sir Bobby Robson was in charge and Ameobi says that things can go back to those ways with a bit of patience.

He compared the current day situation of the Geordie's to that of Tottenham who were languishing at the bottom of the table not too long ago and were this season in the quarter-finals of Europe's premier club competition.

"Football can change very quickly," said Ameobi. "Fortunes in the game go up and down.

"Look at Tottenham, they are trying to get into the top four again this season and just over three years ago they were bottom of the league. Look at what Harry Redknapp has done.

"We know we have a long way to go to reach the heights of the Sir Bobby days and we're not kidding ourselves.

"It's a work in progress and we want to keep on improving like we have been and moving in the right direction.

"Anything is possible. We have to take one step at a time."
