Women's Champions League: Man City coast past Goteborg

Manchester City eased into the last 16 of the Women's Champions League with competent 3-0 win on the day and 5-1on aggregate over Goteborg of Sweden.

City enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half but looked like going in at the break all square until a moment of brilliance from Lauren Hemp on 37 minutes.

Cutting in from the left her 25 yard curled effort dipped over the despairing dive of Goteborg keeper Jennifer Falk to increase the hosts aggregate lead to 3-1.

Before this strike City had created mainly half chances with Janine Beckie, Sam Mewlis, Ellen White and Caroline Weir all going close.

The Swedish visitors moved the ball around neatly but lacked the quality in the final third to cause the City defence many problems. The nearest the visitor's came was when City keeper Ellie Roebuck had to race off her line to clear as Stina Blackstenius looked to collect a through ball.

As the second period began the scoreline almost doubled as Alex Greenwood's 40 yard free kick drifted over the keepers head and hit the cross bar before being scrambled clear by the Swedish defence.

But Goteborg reminded the home side not to become complacent as skipper Vilde Risa first time shot from distance was brilliantly parried by Roebuck.

Back came City and Falk was down quickly to save from Laura Combs. A quick break then saw Ellen White fail to connect with a cross in front of an empty goal.

But the home side were not to be denied and substitute Georgia Stanway reacted first after Falk could only parry White's shot. Moments later number three arrived in identical circumstances and Stanway got her second of the afternoon.

With Goteborg beginning to struggle City threatened to run riot but the expected goal fest never happened as the hosts made five substitutions and comfortable saw out time.
