Wolfsburg challenge Liverpool for Newcastle defender Taylor

Wolfsburg have joined the interest in Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor.

The Sunday Sun says Liverpool and German giants Wolfsburg have joined the group of clubs monitoring Taylor's situation.

The centre-half is being offered a new three-year contract by United on similar terms to his current deal.

But while Taylor - who is represented by Paul Stretford of Triple S Sports - is keen to stay at Newcastle, he is awaiting clearer signs of the club's direction before making a decision.

And that means Wolfsburg, whose manager Steve McClaren once handed Taylor an England squad call-up, Liverpool and other clubs are maintaining a watching brief.

Liverpool, whose own new boss Roy Hodgson was keen on Taylor while in charge at Fulham, are very interested, not least because of the incoming quota rule governing homegrown players.
