Wigan Athletic striker Conor Sammon has had the red card he received on Boxing Day rescinded by the Football Association.
The Latics centre-forward was sent off in the 39th minute of his side's 5-0 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford for an alleged elbow on Michael Carrick.
Referee Phil Dowd had no hesitation in sending Sammon off although there was no reaction from Carrick and after Wigan appealed the subsequent three-match sanction, it has come to light that the incident did not warrant a red card.
"As a result, Sammon's three match suspension has been withdrawn.
"Sammon was shown a red card for violent conduct during Wigan's Premier League match against Manchester United on 26 December.""At a Regulatory Commission hearing today, a claim for wrongful dismissal from Wigan Athletic striker Conor Sammon was upheld," read a statement released on the FA's official website.
