Wigan chairman Whelan: Tottenham nightmare is over

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan says their Tottenham humiliation is forgotten.

Roberto Martinez's team claimed three points at the first time of asking following that thrashing with a single-goal success over Sunderland at the DW Stadium.

"I thought we deserved that win: the lads fought hard, worked hard, grafted and did so well through the whole game," Whelan told the club's website.

"We've shown time and time again this season how good a side we are when we start to play.

"The defeat at Tottenham has been, gone and is now forgotten about.

"We knew we had to get up and get on with things after that game and against Sunderland that's exactly what the lads did.

"It's amazing how much three points can do for you, on this occasion it's lifted us up three places, so it was an important result. If we can get around the 24 points mark by Christmas we'll be happy, and hopefully we can then go on to hold down a place in the top 10."
