Wigan boss Martinez accepts Figueroa destined for bigger things

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez accepts he will eventually sell fullback Maynor Figueroa.

The Honduras international scored one of a great goals in Premiership history in Wigan's 2-2 draw at Stoke City on Saturday.

Yet while he is still a Wigan player, Martinez is looking forward to more moments of football fantasy from the Honduras international.

He purred: "It was a special moment, wasn't it? You need to have a certain kind of arrogance even to try something like that and a touch of genius to pull it off. Only the great players think they can perform such feats and, because of his attitude and his skill, Maynor has the seeds of that greatness in him. He is going to go to the very top.

"We know we won't be able to hold on to him too long. But he has the World Cup coming up next summer and I think he feels a change now would not be good for him.

"It will probably be a different matter after that. Until then, we can enjoy his abilities.

"I am sure that goal will not be the last time we see him do something that makes us shake our heads in wonder. It was not a surprise for me to see him score a goal like that. You regularly see him hit 40 and 50-yard crossfield balls using the same technique. He does not float the ball, he drives it.

"He has been outstanding for us all season and is also a model professional. He came back from injury a week before he should have because he knew we needed him after losing 9-1 at Tottenham.

"His name will be on everyone's lips this week and I am sure we will see that goal replayed many, many times."
