Whelan proud to take Stoke captaincy

Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan was proud to captain the club for victory over Leicester City.

Whelan took over when skipper Ryan Shawcross pulled out after failing a late fitness test on his groin injury.

"To take over as captain was a surprise as Ryan only pulled up on Friday," Whelan said in an interview posted on the Stoke City website.

"Obviously it was a proud moment for myself and my family.

"It's something that nobody can take off me and there are not many people who captain Stoke in the Premier League so I'm really happy.

"Don't get me wrong it's about the eleven and there are eleven captains in there - just because I'm wearing the armband I'm not the only one talking or shouting.

"It was a great day, especially after a bad performance last week.

"To come back and get a win gives us a great buzz around the place.

"We've set our own goals and targets now for the rest of the season and we're dying to achieve them."
