West Ham whizkid Hines centre of international battle

West Ham United attacker Zavon Hines is the subject of an international tug-of-war.

The Sunday Mirror says England are set to call up Hines for the Under-21 squad.

Hines has burst on to the scene in emphatic fashion this season and crowned his impressive start with an eye-catching performance against Liverpool at Upton Park eight days ago. West Ham lost 3-2 but Hines was a constant menace to the Liverpool defence.

His progress has been noted by the England staff and he will be watched in tomorrow night's clash with Manchester City at Eastlands. He could now be in line for a place in Stuart Pearce's next squad.

Although born in Jamaica, Hines was brought up in East London and progressed through the club's academy. He can choose to represent any of the home nations if he is given the chance.

Hines, 20, has been in the full Jamaica squad for a recent friendly but did not play.

And even if he chooses to play for England at Under-21 level, that will not prevent him playing for his homeland should he decide to switch to Jamaica at the age of 23.
