WEST HAM v SOUTHAMPTON RECAP: Hammers fight back to down Saints

West Ham United came from a goal down to beat Southampton 2-1 on Monday.

The Saints, fresh off Saturday's 4-0 win over Arsenal, took the lead in the 13th minute when Shane Long's cross from the left was toe-poked by Dusan Tadic off the shin of Carl Jenkinson.

Slaven Bilic's Hammers had been poor in the first half but improved out of sight after brining on Andy Carroll and Manuel Lanzini at the break.

West Ham levelled in the 69th minute courtesy of a calamitous goal from Michail Antonio which resulted in Victor Wanyama's attempted clearance looping off the head of the winger and in over Maarten Stekelenburg.

The home side then edged in front 10 minutes later when Carroll was on hand to head home a bouncing ball after Antonio's initial headed effort had rammed into the crossbar.

The victory was West Ham's first in nine outings, ending a run of five straight draws, which sent them up to seventh while Ronald Koeman's Saints remained 12th with a third loss in their past four.

MATCH OVERVIEW

West Ham United: 2 (Michail Antonio 69', Andy Carroll 79')
Southampton: 1 (Carl Jenkinson (OG) 13')

TALKING POINTS

- West Ham finally get a win after a number of ok efforts. It is clear they need help up front and will be looking for their top attackers to return as soon as possible so they can establish themselves in the top half.

- Southampton drop straight off after dominating Arsenal on Boxing Day. They look brilliantine patches and poor at other times. How does Koeman make his squad a more consistent group?

WHAT'S NEXT?

West Ham host Liverpool on Saturday while the Saints travel to Norwich City in search of a rebound win.

QUOTES CORNER

West Ham boss Bilic on the comeback:

"At half-time I didn't tell them to go out and win the game, I just asked them to go out and give Southampton a game because we were really poor, it couldn't have been any worse.

"In the end, though, I thought we totally deserved it."

Southampton's Koeman Tweeted his thoughts on the loss:
