West Ham midfielder Downes: Emerson proved himself a top player against Chelsea

West Ham midfielder Flynn Downes hailed the performance of teammate Emerson Palmieri for Saturday's 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

Emerson scored against his old club to earn the point.

Downes told whufc.com: “You are really seeing his quality.

“He is a top player and a great guy as well. You can see what he is about, he has played for top clubs, and now he is doing it here.

“For a modern full-back, you have got to do everything. But he is that: he scores goals, he's good at defending, and he's good on the ball; what more could you want?"

Downes is confident the Hammers are heading in the right direction.

“If you look at the last couple of performances, we have been very good, very solid," the No12 added. “Everyone has got a bit of confidence [from the Everton win].

“It rubs off in training as well, the last couple of weeks of training has been very good. Going out on Saturday, you can see we are a lot more together.

“We started a bit slow, but I think momentum is building and we can take that into next weekend. We have just got to keep it going now, got to keep this momentum building, get a few wins, and I think we will be good."
