West Bromwich Albion defender, Gareth McAuley, will have his red card rescinded by the FA after he was wrongly sent off against Manchester City.
In an astonishing incident early in Albion's eventual 3-0 loss at City, referee Neil Swarbrick sent off Baggies' defender McAuley after having wrongly adjudged the Northern Irishman to have brought down Wilfried Bony.
Replays showed that it was clearly Craig Dawson who had committed the foul on Bony and following the game, Swarbrick admitted that he sent the wrong man off.
Now the FA have moved quickly to rescind McAuley's red card while a one-match ban has been handed to Dawson, the actual offender.
A statement from Professional Game Match Officials Ltd, the organisation responsible for refereeing appointments, read: "The referee has confirmed the offence was caused by a different player, which should be addressed now as a case of mistaken identity. The referee has apologised for his error."
