The Evening Chronicle says Campbell is on trial with Premier League rivals West Bromwich Albion.
The 21-year-old Geordie is understood to be one of the players the Magpies are prepared to let go this summer.
But the Baggies have taken a closer look at the former England youth international, and he played an hour of West Brom's 3-0 reserve win over Arsenal this week.
