West Brom's Wood eyeing England in World Cup

West Brom striker Chris Wood would love the opportunity to come up against England in next year's World Cup.

The 17-year old helped New Zealand qualify for the finals in South Africa when they defeated Bahrain on the weekend and is still in disbelief that the All Whites got there for just the second time in their history.

"My initial feeling was just amazement at the final whistle," he told the Birmingham Mail.

"We're only the second team in New Zealand history to qualify.

"It's a very big achievement and I'm full of happiness and excitement about going to the World Cup - the biggest international stage in the world.

"Ryan Giggs has never had the opportunity to go to a World Cup and he is one of the best players to have played in the Premier League.

"I'm looking forward to the draw."

Wood joins a host of West Brom players who have made it through to the World Cup and would love to play against them in South Africa but says being drawn in the same group as England would be something else.

"It would be good to get one of the other Baggies boys but most of all I'd love to draw England," he added. "It's hard to imagine being on the pitch with the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard at a major tournament.

"They're all world-class players."

Wood reiterated the point that for New Zealand to get through is an enormous achievement especially seeing they are regarded as a 'non-football' nation.

"New Zealand were ranked 100th in the world before we qualified, while everyone else seems to be ranked in the top 40," he added further.

"We're a big outsider and it's a great achievement for all of us to be going to a World Cup."
