West Bromwich Albion decided to go back for Pepe Mel after initially having doubts about the Spaniard.
Mel was named new manager of the Baggies yesterday.
The Daily Mail says Mel headed the shortlist, was interviewed for the post and appeared to be odds-on to assume control shortly after Christmas.
But the club said that he was being withdrawn from the process because of differences over the appointment of his backroom staff.
However, it is believed the real reason was that West Brom were having second thoughts after completing their due diligence on the candidate.
After weeks of deliberation they have now returned to Mel who has made his name in Spain after spells with Rayo Vallecano and Real Betis.
